Schaffner, W

Mr. Schaffner was born in New York City and attended the National Academy of Design. During his career he worked as a scenic artist and set designer for the Schuberts and the Ziegfelds on Broadway. He primarily painted in oils and pastels in the lower Hudson River Valley and Connecticut and was known for his coastal scenes and marine industrial paintings. One of his more notable pastels showed the stern of a boat tied up near a working barge in the Hudson River and was used as a backdrop for a stage production. He exhibited at the 6th Annual Art Show at the Miami Women’s Club, February 20, 1934. Later that year Mr. Schaffner passed away and his widow packed up a truckload of his paintings and moved out west. This is one of the explanations for finding many pieces of his work in the mid west today.
