Schliom, Sylvia

A 20th century contemporary artist who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia and achieved a B.F.A. from the Moore Institute, Philadelphia. She exhibited at the Whitney in New York and at the famed Gallerie Duncan in Paris, France. She was primarily known for her seascapes and landscapes but has shown great skill in painting nudes. Her colors are best described as rigorous and brilliant giving an expressionist look with fauvist accents. Her tones are enriched by their own intensity and do not rely on a play of contrasts. The lines observed in her works show a dynamism of being rather than delineation. The color use underscores her skills as a colorist. The landmark painting of the Fire Island Queen in Long Island, New York was captured by her brush just prior to this famous ship being destroyed by flames.
